1. FOOD On the day of travel, eat a full meal before you go- don’t start out hungry. Bring a meal or two. Pack snacks - protein pancakes, rice cake sandwiches, apples, nuts, bars, etc. When you reach your destination, hit up the grocery store - stock up on fresh fruit and veggies, hummus, chicken, deli meat, etc. If you have a kitchen, get basics like eggs, oatmeal, get a bagged salad and cans of tuna. Food is a huge part of travel - you want to try local cuisine, new restaurants, etc but just keep in mind that not every meal needs to be a culinary experience and your gut will thank you if you maintain hydration, veggie intake and don’t let yourself get too hangry.
2. WATER Increase hydration during travel. Bring a water bottle, (drink your water bottle in line for security) When you arrive, buy gallon jugs to refill water bottles- better for environment and more cost effective. If you’ll be consuming alcohol, increase water intake - I recommend a glass of water with every alcoholic drink to ensure you’re not getting dehydrated. I love to order club soda at restaurants because it’s refreshing and hydrating.
3. ROUTINE Keep parts of your normal routine even during travel - this will help you stay grounded and maintain your healthy habits. I have a morning cocktail that I start every morning with and it’s no different while traveling. I bring my greens shot and my protein shakes because these ensure I am getting the nutrients I need even if it’s not possible to get them through food while on vacation.
4. MOVEMENT Move your body - explore the area, have some solo time. Plan some active parts of your trip - Invite others to join you for activities. Check out yoga studios, gyms in the area. Or just walk and run. Build in some time to do active things you love but don’t normally have time for in your regular life.
5. RELAXATION Relish in the downtime and relaxation time. Give your body and mind time to de-stress and refresh. If you workout a lot at home, maybe take some time off and let your body recover. If you don’t get to be as active as you like in your real life, maybe schedule in some movement - but be sure to relax and unwind. This way you will get home feeling rejuvenated and ready to hit the ground running.
Happy Healthy Travels!
